06. August 1940

In July 1940, the Soviet puppet-government and -parliament began to clearly move towards the final termination of Estonia's national independence. On July16, Ždavnov had demanded for Estonia's integration into the Soviet Union as quickly as possible. On July 21, the National Council announced Estonia as a Soviet Socialist Republic and requested it to be integration into the Soviet Union. President Päts was forced to resign on the same day and his authority was taken by Prime Minister Vares. Estonia was officially joined with the Soviet Union on August 6, when the Supreme Soviet accepted Estonia's „voluntary" request.
This ended the first period of Estonia's independence (or the second if the one day of independence in the beginning of 1918 is counted) and the era of occupation began, which lasted for over 50 years.
