The Swedes take Paide over from the Russians

to map

September 1581

In 1581 the Swedes started the decisive attack against the Russians in Northern Estonia and conquered most of it. Among others, they also arrived to Paide at the beginning of autumn, by starting to besiege it actively.

The Russians still resisted actively and only thereafter surrendered when they had eaten their horses. The Swedes considered the capture of Paide so important that the festive religious service was organized in its honour and salute was let from the cannons, according to chronicler Russow some men even cried of joy.

Balthasar Russow. Liivimaa kroonika. 1993.
